Why Do You Blog?

March 31, 2008

Just saw this on ProBlogger (And if you have a blog and you’re not reading ProBlogger, you really should be!). Darren Rowse asked readers to vote on why they blog, and the answers were a bit surprising to me.

I guess ProBlogger is a resource for bloggers hoping to monetize their blog, but I was expecting that Networking (either social or business) would come in higher and Money would come in lower. I’m quite pleased that my blog is supporting itself, but I’m not making enough from blogging to make cash my main priority… it’s more for fun and networking first, and then money second.

Is AdSense Worth It?

March 24, 2008

If you are a blog or website owner you know about AdSense and how you can generate monthly income from them. Well all I have to say is that is easier said than done. I have been blogging for nearly 3 years now and I have yet to receive one check from Google AdSense. The whole concept of AdSense sounds fine and dandy but the reality of people clicking on ads on your site is nearly impossible from my experience. When I first signed up with them I was constantly checking my stats to see how much money I made. Pretty soon I forgot about it all together because I wasn’t generating enough clicks to even matter. So in my own personal opinion I don’t think having AdSense on your blog or website is even worth it.

Text Ad For Small Publishers

March 12, 2008

Hey, if you have a blog or a website, you should check out www.text-link-ads.com. Not all sites qualify (they have the usual rules about foul language, naked pics and overuse of l33t), but if yours does, you can sell small text ads for related products.

It has all the good parts of Google AdSense. Once you install the code, and choose how many ads and what topics you’d like, you’re pretty much done. Text-Link-Ads then sells the slots, and sends you an email telling you they’ve done it. If you don’t like the ad, you can take it down (This has never happened to me, but they do offer the ability to filter your ads).

And, it’s not a big blinky banner, just a line of text in the font and colors of your site. I’m always looking for a way to make my sites earn their keep, without spamming my readers.

It’s even better than AdSense for the small publisher because you get paid monthly, even if your check is only a few bucks, instead of waiting until you get to $100.

Check it out for your sites!
